Veterans Memorial Garden

It began with the planting of a single oak tree in 2011 as a tribute to Staff Sgt. Curtis ‘Moose’ Oakes of the 1st Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). ‘Moose’ was killed at the age of 29 in the line of duty on November 29, 2010.

SSG Oakes attended Alexander High School and graduated from Hocking College’s School of Natural Resources, with a dual degree in Wildlife and Fish Management and Aquaculture.

Since the planting of the oak tree, which is located in front of Light Hall, Valarie Oakes (Curtis’ mother) has dreamed of honoring other veterans, who have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. From Valarie’s dream has sprung a committee of folks dedicated to creating the Hocking College Veteran's Memorial Garden. We hope you will consider getting involved with the realization of the dream.
